Bicycling Georgia,
South Carolina and North Carolina
October, 2006

Milledgeville to Covington, GA

October 29, 2006
Distance 56.6 Miles
Elevation 2085 Feet

The sun was out as we started our bicycle ride today. However, the temperature was again cold, just 42 degrees. The first couple of miles were mostly downhill as we got back onto our route from the motel. We made a right turn and for the next dozen or so miles we were going up and down granny gear hills. (Hills with grades greater than 5 %.)

We were already tired from the hills compounded by the strong headwinds we had encountered the previous day, so the hills today were even harder. The good news was that we did not have a headwind. We were traveling through hardwood forests most of the time and the trees were just beginning to turn color. It was very beautiful.

After those first miles we came to several miles of fairly flat road without steep grades. Finely we approached Covington and had to ride on a very busy 4-lane highway that did not have any shoulders. We have found that almost all the roads in North Caroline, South Caroline and George do not have any shoulders or have rumble strips cut into the narrow shoulders.

We arrived at our motel and it was one of the worst motels we have stayed at in a long time. Compounded by the fact that all the near restaurants were closed, giving us no source for food. We ordered Pizza only it took over 2 hours for them deliver; what they said would take ¾ of an hour..
