Charleston to Walterboro, SC

October 24, 2006
Distance 50.9 Miles
Elevation 850 Feet

It appears that we will be riding in colder weather for the rest of the trip. Today it was 38 degrees out when we started to ride to Walterboro. We cycled about 10 miles and stopped at the Magnolia Plantation and toured the Plantation house.

We spent an hour at the plantation and would have stayed longer but it was just too cold to walk thru the gardens and sit for a lecture in a restored slave cabin.

After the plantation tour, we continued on our way. The only problem was that it was cold and we now had a headwind. As if that was not enough, we were very slowly also going uphill. Sometime it would seem that we were going downhill but we were really just going uphill at an even slower rate.

All day we were going through forests.

In some places we would see where the forest had been harvested and new trees planted some years earlier. In other places we saw very tall straight trees still standing. All day we were passed by timber trucks and by gravel trucks. The biggest problem we had was finding places where we could use a restroom and finding a place to sit down and eat lunch. Around 1:30 we finally found a Subway shop for a quick meal.

Shortly after 3PM, we finally finished our ride and arrived at tonight's motel. We spent a couple of hours trying to decide how far to ride tomorrow and looking for motels. We ate supper at the restaurant across the parking lot and we are planning an early bedtime because we are all very tired tonight.
