Bicycling Utah, Arizona, Nevada

May - 2009

Monday May 4, 2009
Bryce Canyon to Panguitch, UT
Distance 15.2 Miles

This morning, we woke up and walked over to a building that had a Diner sign for breakfast. Since we were less than impressed with our dinner at the restaurant, we thought the diner would be a better choice. We were not impressed there, either. We ended up with a breakfast we could have ordered at Burger King. We had a meeting during breakfast and decided to skip the rest day and head back towards Hwy 89, which is the way to get to Zion National Park. So, we packed up the panniers, loaded the bikes and headed to the main building to check out. After settling up our bills, Scott asked the nice desk clerks about when they expect the UPS truck. Turns out, When in St. George, on day 1, Scott left his phone on the night stand, remembered this at mile 23 and had to call and ask the nice clerks in St George to send the phone to Bryce. So, we checked out at 11:00, then wasted time until the UPS truck drove in, at 11:45. After unpacking his phone, we were on our way. Yesterday, going uphill, we had a tail wind all day long. Today, we had head and cross winds, but it didn't matter much because we were pretty happy to be going downhill. We pedaled about 5 miles before stopping at The Soup And Pie restaurant. Jim had chocolate cream pie and Barbara and Scott split a piece of cherry ala mode- once again, the ice cream could have been scooped with a soup ladle. We found the end of the bike path and rode it all the way to the beginning.

Red Rocks Canyon

Our day was sunny, but not very warm. Throughout the day, we rode 1000+ feet downhill, which warmed the temperature a couple degrees. We debated about how far to ride and decided to stop at Harold's Place. The sign said to go into the restaurant to check in for a room. We checked in and got 2 cute cabins. Our dinner was fantastic. The cook, Harold, is actually a chef from Las Vegas. We all had incredible meals. After dinner, the hostess talked us into a really yummy dessert, so we split a strawberry shortcake and apple pie ala mode. We had lots of pie today. After dinner, we spent some time discussing tomorrow's trip to Zion National Park.
