Cape Girardeau, MO -- Rest Day

Sunday, September 28, 2003
Distance Cycled: 7 miles
Total elevation gain: 205 feet
Our Total Flat Tires on trip to date: 1

We slept in until almost 8:00 AM. We got dressed in our bike clothes, took most of the weight off of the bicycle and headed to downtown Cape Girardeau to see what sites we could see on a Sunday. We ate breakfast at a restaurant that had seen better days and was home to a smoking crowd. The food was not bad and the cook wrote HI on my omelet with cheese and a happy face on Mary Kay's pancake with extra pancake batter. Cape Girardeau has a concrete floodwall to protect it from the Mississippi River floods. In 1993 the river was within two to three feet from the top of the floodwall. To make the wall more attractive, they are painting murals on the floodwall, several of them are complete and a couple of them painters were working on as we passed.

They have also painted several other murals on buildings around the historic downtown area. With Becky leading the way, we saw most of them. In the afternoon we took in a movie, ate Mexican food for supper at 4:30 and returned to the motel to complete our chores and go to bed early.
