Bicycling New England, the
Erie Canal, & around Lake Ontario 2005
Kingston to Ivy Lea Ontario

July 30, 2005
Distance 27.7 Miles

We left Kingston after eating a very light breakfast of bagels and toast. We road 7 miles and turned onto a small ferry which took us over to an island, we rode 9 miles around the island and then took another ferry back to the mainland. As you can see Barb and Scott really enjoyed the ferry.

Scott and Barb - Ferry St Lawrence River

When we had ridden 15 miles we stopped and finally had a second breakfast in Gananoque. The restaurant was called the Golden Apple and they had really good coffee. This was the best breakfast we have had since we left Buffalo. We also got to eat outside under umbrellas. Our waiter told us where the Dollar Store was and we rode our bikes up the main street until we found it. Now, we have a good supply of sunscreen to last us through the trip. After leaving Gananoque, we got back on the waterfront trail and traveled on a narrow paved bicycle path. It was so narrow that it was difficult to pass slow moving bicycles or bicycles coming in the opposite direction. At a place, where the St Lawrence River spreads into a low area, we watched several Canadian Geese eating water plants in the shallow water. They put their heads under water and kicked their little feet up in the air. The bike path took us all the way to our hotel.

Ducks Eating Ivy

We reached our destination around 12:30 PM and found that the boat trip we planned to take had left 3 minutes before we arrived. We will put off the boat trip until tomorrow which is our rest day. We are staying at a marina, with a restaurant by the water. We can watch the boats from the restaurant and from our own deck. It is very restful. We walked over to the next marina in the afternoon to check out tomorrow's boat ride. The good news is it is so close we will not need to use our bicycles. Today was a very easy day and it almost feels like an extra rest day.
