Bicycling New England, the
Erie Canal, & around Lake Ontario 2005
Woonsocket RI to Putnam CT

June 27, 2005
Distance 28.1 Miles

This morning we slept in to make up for the short nights being tourists in Boston. There was no breakfast in our motel so we walked a couple of blocks to a Bagel shop for an egg/bagel sandwich. On the way back we noticed the Public Library next door, so Mary Kay had to stop and pick up a used book for $0.25. It is hard to travel without reading material. We did not get on the road this morning until 9:45. The latest start we have ever had. We cycled through most of the Woonsocket and then headed out to the country. We crossed several rivers and traveled beside a couple of lakes.

Small Stream

We stopped in a small town in Rhode Island for a quick lunch that took over an hour. We then started up several more hills. George and Jane had another flat tire just after lunch. 3 miles before we reached our destination we turned off the main highway and traveled on Five Mile River Road into Connecticut. The road had lots of trees which provided shade and the temperature dropped about 10 degrees. A real blessing as it was very hot and humid. The road took us straight to the motel.

When we arrived we changed our back tire because it had 1900 miles on it and was getting a little thin. Jim also cleaned and oiled the chains. So now we have a bike ready for the hills tomorrow. The local motel's restaurant closed last week so we had to walk over a mile into town for dinner. We stopped at a bicycle shop and George bought a new tube for his bike and Jim got a new mirror for Mary Kay as hers was broken when our bicycle fell over yesterday.
