Bicycling New England, the
Erie Canal, & around Lake Ontario 2005
Brunswick to Portland ME

June 15, 2005
Distance 27.4 Miles
Climbing Elevation: 1,090 feet

We got up this morning to cold cloudy skies. The temperature outside while we ate breakfast was a chilly 48 degrees. Very cold especially, after we had mailed our warmer clothes to Buffalo, thinking that we would not need them. We left around 8:30 and started the ride to Freeport and the factory outlet stores. We arrived in Freeport a little after 9:00, walked around but did not find anything that said "buy me". Although Jim did get a nice white shirt, that will dry quickly. We ate lunch, early not because we were hungry, but in hopes that hot food would warm us up.

Around 11:30 we pulled out and headed towards Portland. The weather was either light rain, or very heavy mist. It was cold and the glasses kept fogging up making it very hard to see the road. After several discussions on which way to go and getting lost a couple of times. We finally decided to follow highway 1 most of the way to Portland. With only having to ask directions twice we were able to find the motel with the GPS.

After cleaning the bicycles we decided to walk down to the Port. Jim and I after walking about 1/3 of the way decided it was just to cold and turned around and came back and ate dinner close to the motel. Jane and George walked down to the Visitor Center and Jane found a pair of pants she had been looking for. We have reservations for two nights in this motel, so tomorrow we will ride a loop out and see the light houses or will spend the time at the art museum. Either way the weather will help us to decide in the morning what we will do.

Jim took several pictures of old homes on our walk. You can see some of them below.
