Bicycling New England, the
Erie Canal, & around Lake Ontario 2005
Kennebunk to Kittery ME

June 18, 2005
Distance 39.2 Miles
Climbing Elevation: Unknown

We got up this morning, ate a very good breakfast at the monastery. The largest selection we have had to date. We took the bicycles out of our rooms and rode back to Kennebunkport, and then headed for the senior Bush compound and is summer home. We followed the sea shore as we headed east until the house was in view. When we arrived the sea mist almost completely hid the buildings but by the time we turned around and headed back to Kennebunk to pickup the rest of our stuff, the all the buildings were easy to see.

We picked up the rest of our luggage and headed towards Kittery. Except for a short distance on a busy road, we spent most of the day on back roads that went along the Atlantic Ocean shore. Today was Saturday and we had much more traffic. If this was the middle of summer with bright sunshine and warm temperatures, it would have been difficult to travel these roads because of all the skate boarders, walkers, children, and traffic. At one place we came to a beach where there were surfers riding the Atlantic Ocean waves into shore. The waves were not more that 3 foot in height but the surfers seemed to be having a good time.

We arrived at the motel around 1:30 but they would not let us check in until 2:00 so we walked up the hill to a truck stop and had lunch. We then checked in showered, washed clothes and worked on the routes from here to Boston. The weather today was a little warmer, no rain, but we still did not need to use sun screen.
