Bicycling New England, the
Erie Canal, & around Lake Ontario 2005
Kittery ME to Newburyport MA

June 19, 2005
Distance 28.8 Miles
Climbing Elevation: Unknown

We woke up this morning and headed to our motel furnished breakfast. The breakfast was the absolute minimum in a continental breakfast, orange juice or coffee plus Muffins or English Muffins. It was enough to get started with but not enough to go for a long ride. We left the motel and had a problem figuring out how to get to the bridge we wanted to use to enter New Hampshire from Maine. We finally found the bridge and started across. Unfortunately the bridge had a grated draw bridge and Mary Kay was so frightened of going across a grated draw bridge that she insisted we stop and walk across the grated section. After crossing the bridge, we headed for the Atlantic Ocean coast and went south. The route crossed from Maine to Massachusetts spending 20 miles in New Hampshire on the way. The route was very flat so we made good time. Most of the way we could see the ocean.

Atlantic Ocean Sea Birds

We stopped in Hampton for a late breakfast; we had breakfast in Maine, lunch in New Hampshire and dinner in Massachusetts. Not bad for being on a bicycle. Near Hampton we were surprised to see parking meters along the beaches.

Along the way we crossed three more grated draw bridges. Mary Kay stopped and walked two of them but the draw bridge was up on the last one and Jim was able to talk her into trying to ride across the last one. She rode across without any problem.

We enjoyed riding along the ocean looking at all the large houses. Some of them were very old and others looked like they had been built in the last 10 years. The weather was again cold, especially the wind off of the ocean, but good luck no rain. We arrived in Newburyport before noon and had to wait until after 1:00 before we could get a room so we walked around downtown Newburyport and looked at all the open stores. Our room is in an old house built in the 1800's; after we checked in we cleaned up and looked forward to a good dinner.
