Bicycling New England, the
Erie Canal, & around Lake Ontario 2005
Syracuse to Weedsport, NY

July 8, 2005
Distance 31.7 Miles

We woke up with one plan - sleeping in and leaving late for a canal museum in Syracuse that did not open until 10:00. However, after looking at the weather channel and seeing all the rain predicted we decided to ignore the museum and just start riding.

We walked down the hill to a restaurant for breakfast. The motel provided, orange juice and donuts, but we do not call that a breakfast. We then loaded up the bicycle and started out at 8:30. Of course the first thing we had was lots of hills, by the time we had ridden one mile I think we had covered more hills them we did all day yesterday. The good news is that because it was so early we did not have too much traffic as we went through downtown Syracuse. We followed country roads almost all the way today. We did not get onto a major road until the last 4 miles.

We arrived in Weedsport about 11:00. Ate lunch at a hamburger-ice cream stand and then backtracked one block to our motel. They allowed us to check in at 12:15 which gave us time to wash our clothes, and put them outside in the wind to dry. We also had time to watch the bicycle race on TV. We have a room on the back side of the motel and down the hill. We are the only ones here and you can hear the birds outside our window. Although the ceiling of this place is very low, it feels like you are walking into a cave and when I stretch my hands are flat against the ceiling.

Flowers

Today we only stopped to take pictures of flowers. One of interesting things we found in this area that we have not mentioned is that in several towns the curbs on the public streets were all made of granite not cement. It is hard for us to believe that granite is cheaper to install then cement curbing.

We made the right decisions today we arrived without one drop of rain.
