Bicycling from Washington DC
Through:
Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware & Virginia

2007 - August - September

September 7, 2007
Dumfries VA to Washington DC

Distance: 41.0 miles
Elevation climbed: 1,395 ft

Today for the first 15 miles we traveled on the same kind of up and down busy roads that we traveled on the last two days.

We crossed a river and turned right and suddenly the route was much flatter and had almost no traffic. All good things come to an end and soon we were back on those busy roads but without the big hills. We were along side an army base and at each corner it seemed as if every car was turning right into the army base. A short time later we turned right and headed for Mount Vernon, George Washington's home.

We spent several hours touring Mount Vernon and the exhibits. They have greatly added to the museum since our last visit in 2000. After a good lunch in their café we started out on the Mount Vernon bicycle path.

We passed the Ragan Airport and cycled across the Arlington Memorial Bridge which dropped us at the Lincoln Memorial. We then cycled down the mall and then up to our hotel. George and Jane arrived about an hour after us and then we all ate our last meal at the same restaurant we visited the last time we were in Washington DC.

Tomorrow morning we will ride our bicycle down to the Union Station and then box the bike for its trip home. George and Jane will fly home from Baltimore. All in all it was a great trip. Only one day of rain, lots of beautiful sights and we learned a lot about the beginning history of our nation.
