Mark's RC Balsa SkyRider

April 2010:

I am finally getting tired of building foam planes. I'm sure I will build more but I'm in the mood to build something that will last. Although foam planes are easy to repair, they also don't last as long as balsa planes and don't generally fly the same after repairs. The RC Powers SkyRider is one of my favorite foam planes to fly. The only problem I have with it is I get a lot of flutter out of the back wing at times and when I crash it tends to break into MANY parts. I've decided to build one out of balsa.

Design Goals:

  • Maintain the slow flight characteristics of the RC Powers design.
  • Be easily hoverable and fully 3D
  • Have steerable wheels so it will steer while not under power.
  • Be strong enough to survive a normal crash without breaking
  • Easily fit into the trunk of my car.
