Bicycling Florida to Texas
Through
Alabama, Mississippi,
Arkansas & Oklahoma

2008 - May - June

Friday, June 6, 2008
Aberdeen to Houston MS
Distance: 26.9 Miles

Because of the heat wave here in the south we again awoke at 5:30, loaded the bicycle and went to the nearby restaurant for food. We ordered oatmeal with raisons and brown sugar and it seemed to take forever to get our food. By 7:15 AM we were headed out. We almost missed the first turn because Jim goofed again. He forgot to turn off the GPS last night and also forgot to charge the GPS. The result was a GPS that would not work.

We traveled on Mississippi State Highway 8 all day. The highway was in good shape until we passed Highway ALT 45. Then the highway had a bump every few feet. These bumps were so bad that the Mississippi Highway Department had filled in the bumps with asphalt and even some of these patches had broken out leaving a pothole in the middle of a high speed highway. Mary Kay spent all day dodging bumps. The good news was we only had 27 miles to go today and we arrived in Houston at 9:45 AM. We stopped at the motel and it looked as if it was being remodeled so we were not sure if we would be able to get a room. We were lucky and a non-smoking room was clean and ready for us to move into.

We rested and went for lunch at noon, at a convenience store. Mary Kay had fish and macaroni and cheese and Jim had spaghetti. We returned to the motel, enjoyed the swimming pool and for supper we visited the grocery store across the street and cooked in our room.
