2008 - May - June

Cleveland to Greenville MS
Distance: 43.5 Miles

The sky was totally overcast when we arose at 5:15 AM. As a result, it was a little cooler today than it has been for the last week and there was no wind when we began riding. All day we rode on little used back roads, for the first 20 miles. Even the scenic highway along the Mississippi river had very little traffic,(which is part of the MRT bicycle route which we cycled part of in 2003). We again saw lots of farm fields growing rice, corn and beans. We also passed the plantation that grows more cotton seeds then anywhere else. Because the Mississippi delta is an old flood plain, the route today was just as flat as yesterday's route. Without a headwind we covered more than 30 miles in less than 3 hours even with several rest stops.

Just before be arrived in Greenville we stopped at the Winterville Mounds State Park. These mounds were built by Indians around 1000 to 1450 AD and are believed to have been used until sometime in the 1600's. We spent at least an hour talking to the gentlemen in charge of the museum and looking at the mounds, it was a good stop.

We continued into Greenville, checked into our motel, ate lunch on a Casino boat and walked around the Greenville downtown. The Casino was very empty, more employees then customers.

Dinner was an interesting experience. Three people had recommended Doe's, ranked 5th restaurant in the USA, and where President Clinton used to eat when he was governor of AR. So we walked about 6 blocks through the slum part of town to an old house that looked like the rest of the neighborhood, except for the guard outside that was watching the cars. We opened the front door of this old beat up house, to finding ourselves standing in the middle of the kitchen or where they were cooking steaks. We walked thru that room into another kitchen where lots of people were working, a lady turned around and said "Oh do you want a table follow me" and she took us to a room in the back of the house. There were no menus, but we had our choice of 2 pound T-Bones or 4 pound Sirloins. We both had boiled shrimp which was served with French Fries. Good but not something out of this world, as we walked out the man cooking the meat said "Come back".
